Mind at Work
I really enjoyed reading this novel. I found it more entertaining and interesting than On Ethnography. I got through it easier as well. I enjoyed how the novel taught you something as it went along, but it had a story behind it. I find it interesting to learn about the authors life and family members including how they work and spend their daily lives. All of this is brought to my attention, while teaching about the different work ethics of others. Everyone comes from their own individual background and works to their own personal standards. The idea of judgment comes into play and I think that it is completely wrong. No one knows what other people go through and how they got to where they are today. Everyone has they're own decisions to make and even if they're not the right ones, they will figure it out eventually. No one has a right to judge others. This novel brought this concept to your attention while you felt like you were reading any old fiction story line, which I really liked.
My Freshman Year
One of the connections made from the two readings this time was the talk of skin color. Judgmental actions can also often be based of race as well. In My Freshman Year, she begins to talk about diversity and how the population of students work together as a whole. She analyzes and notices how people tend to eat and sit together in specific groups. The whites with the whites and minorities with the minorities. I think that this is just how society works in some way, but in another way it's wrong. Especially for those who are left out. Some of the information that was said makes me think of how I notice a lot of similarities here. I find that it ca be very cliquey and antisocial around Bloomsburg as well. Not a lot of people like to branch out of their shells and meet new people once they already have a group of friends that their comfortable with. I think that college's and students around this age just act the same no matter where they are because of how our generation was brought up. I know that I can be shy and unwilling to start conversation with certain people as well. This is not only because we have such a judgmental mind, but also because we find it easier to talk not in person as well.
